Latitude 0 to 3

The Latitude 0 to 3 project

It is only within us that the landscape became landscape. That’s why if i imagine them, I create them; if I create them, they exist; if they exist, I see them just I do other landscape. Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

The Latitude 0_3 project gets its name from the Mercator nautical chart, which is an ancient universal code, a base with nor geographical indications, neither hydrographic features. The lack of determinate reference points makes it possible to draw a personal itinerary on the map. The latitude from 0 to 3 degrees delineates on the globe an area close to the equator. In the Mercator projection the globe is described as a cylindrical map where the meridians are reported parallel to themselves, which means that between the latitude from 0 to 3 the graphical representation approximately translates the forms. This approximation makes up a gap. It becomes the land of exception because it’s not reducible to measurement, the nameless area where the forms’ disclosures are originated.

Latitude 0_3 is a journey around the forms of the landscape as a way of being of the mind and vice versa. My research is born from the need of explore the landscape within the forms of nature and the image perceived of them, whose relationship related to the 1st Article of the European Landscape Convention (2001), displays that the summary of the natural and cultural elements of the landscape shapes its whole identity. Imaging these components as made of tissue paper, overlapping them we find out that some clues, tracks and directions emerge. Their interpretation delineates tracks. These are translated into outlines and, trying to image their aspect in the space, a sort of “path toward the artwork” arises. Where the variations of outlines and their aspect meet each other, all the possible landscape’s identity we can imagine are revealed. If we think the landscape as in image, the imagination’s role overtakes us, leading back the identity to a profound reference system composed by the psyche and the myth. Its ability is to go beyond the natural and cultural components.

Landscape are endless, compared to their limited points of view we can see, know and represent. The Latitude 0_3 project tries to enclose the endless landscapes within a reference system that is able to reveal the essential bonds, developing them in typologies, categories and genres. The Beaten Paths, The Deluges, Trees, Reflection, Waterfalls, Labyrinths, Through the Glass, The Dark Forest, Domestic Landscapes, Rainbow Color: these models, which differ from aspect to their interpretation, reflect the plural landscape.
